Steve E. Watkins (S’80-M’90-SM'98) is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Associate Chair of Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Studies at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla). He was the Faculty-Member-in-Residence for the 2005 Washington Internships for Students of Engineering (WISE) Program, was an IEEE-USA 2004 Congressional Fellow, was a visiting physicist for the U.S.A.F. Phillips Laboratory at the Kirtland Air Force Base, and was a visiting scholar for Nippon Telegraph and Telephone in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Watkins is a member of IEEE (senior member), ASEE, and SPIE (senior member). At Missouri S&T, he is advisor to the Eta Kappa Nu Chapter and the IEEE AESS Student Chapter (which competed and placed second in the 2008 Outback Challenge Competition). He is student activities coordinator for IEEE Region 5, served as the North Area Chair for IEEE Region 5, and served as the IEEE St. Louis Section Chair in 2003. He has been involved in several conferences including Technical Program Chair for the 2005 IEEE GLOBECOM Conference and General Chair for the 2009 IEEE ITSC. His awards include Outstanding Member from Region 5 IEEE (2005), IEEE RAB Achievement Award (2004), Outstanding Educator from Region 5 IEEE (1999), IEEE St. Louis Section Awards (2005, 1996, and 1994), MSM-UMR Alumni Excellence in Teaching Award (1995), and National Eta Kappa Nu Outstanding Young Electrical Engineer finalist (1993). He has served the community on the local school board starting in 2001 (Board President for 2008-2012). His research interests include interdisciplinary applications of smart structures, sensing systems, and engineering and pre-college education. He is author on 1 patent, 3 book chapters, 42 archival papers, and 77 other works. He received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
