The New Space Video Series on YouTube is an initiative that I started taking advantage of the opportunity of staying at home during the COVID-19 lockdown. The series consists of video lectures, and video interviews. It is an attempt to explore the phenomenon of New Space using different lenses - both technical and engineering oriented, and with different formats, such as lectures, and interviews.
In conceiving this video series, I have decided to use a new type of media - YouTube videos - since one of the most important groups of stakeholders of this series, for me as an editor with a day job as university professor, is young people - our future recruits.
The series aims at reaching three groups of stakeholders. First and foremost, the lectures are tailored for young students who are seeking to understand New Space from multidisciplinary perspectives, complementing undergraduate and graduate engineering training at university level. It seeks to reach students from all disciplinary fields, including engineers, economists, lawyers, and technology enthusiasts alike, rather than focusing on aerospace engineering students only. The series aims at educating students to look at technology as an important, but yet just a part of a complex puzzle, that is the one of creation and operations of an industrial organization - including startup companies.
The second group in the audience is professionals that do not utilize space data or space assets in their daily activity, but would greatly benefit from doing so if they were aware of the new opportunities enabled by the space sector for the non-space sectors of the economy. An important goal of the series is to raise awareness of non-space industry, academia, and government players who may effectively become users, and contributors, to New Space endeavors.
The third group of intended audience is professionals in the aerospace sector in academia, industry and government - both young and senior - who seek to update themselves on the latest happenings in the New Space sector and obtain insights coming directly from industry leaders. The interviews in the series aim to involve researchers, startup founders, and senior level executives, or equivalent stature in their organization.
Since June 2, 2020, the series will contribute to the activities of the Glue Technologies Technical Panel of the IEEE Aerospace Electronic and Systems Society, and seeks to be open to any suggestions and contributions IEEE members from AESS, as well as other technical societies, wish to provide. Proposals for speaker suggestions or volunteer contributions can be submitted at https://forms.gle/RDkSxAk6fekSzFEX8.
