A Welcome Message from the AESS President

You are here

Greetings! 問候!Saluti! Schöne Grüße! Pozdravy! ¡Saludos! Groeten! 인사말! Приветствую! Pozdrowienia! Selamlar! घणी खम्मां! Salutations!

On behalf of the nearly 5,000 members of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) worldwide, welcome to our website! I encourage you to see and experience all that we have to offer here in the way of professional development activities, products and services. We are a diverse group of industry, academia, government, and student members of IEEE whose career interests include integrated electronic systems and enabling technologies in applications on land, sea, air or space. If you work in these areas, I encourage you to consider making AESS your professional home.

Why is this important? In my experience, I’ve noticed that a commitment to continual professional growth differentiates those who succeed in their chosen career field . . . and those who don’t. Staying up-to-date with changing technologies, developing new skills (including “soft” skills such as teamwork and leadership), and building relationships with other professionals in your field can help you to become a more influential, prominent member of your technical community. These are not skills or credentials you can fully develop by yourself; instead they are best enhanced, I believe, through active engagement in a professional society. We invite you to join us and, equally important, participate fully in our technical activities. As with many things in life, the more you put in, the more you get out.

Whether your interests lie in attending our world-renowned technical conferences or authoring papers in highly-rated publications, AESS has what you’re looking for. You can participate in our technical panels, which cover an array of fields-of-interest such as radar, avionics, guidance and controls, gyros and accelerometers, navigation, space systems, etc. And since AESS is international in scope, you can meet peers in chapters around the world. As a member, you have access to educational initiatives as well as professional mentoring and networking opportunities. We are committed to providing the highest level of service and benefits to our members and affiliates at every stage of their careers. I have been an IEEE member for over 41 years and involved with AESS for over 28 years, and I can truly say that being actively engaged with the premier society in my profession has truly enriched my career.

Walt Downing, IEEE Life Senior Member, AESS President, 2020-2021
