Mentee Qualities, Roles, Responsibilities

Desirable Qualities in a Mentee

  • Displays enthusiasm and drive for both professional and personal self-development 
  • Initiative to create and cultivate the mentoring relationship by devoting time and effort
  • Preparedness to seek guidance and ability to communicate effectively and courteously
  • Maintaining a positive attitude and a sense of duty to contribute to the relationship 
  • Willingness to accept, consider and objectively reflect on constructive feedback 
  • Trustworthy, respectful, understanding and patient, without exception

Primary Responsibilities of a Mentee

  • Seek approval and support from your supervisor to enter into a mentoring relationship
  • Do not impose personal issues on the mentor
  • Interact regularly with the mentor and provide adequate notice of changes in meeting times
  • Take an active role in reviewing your progress and that of the mentoring relationship
  • Conclude the relationship respectfully when it ceases to be useful
  • Provide the AESS Mentoring Coordinator with any feedback on the program

Core Role of a Mentee

  • Take the main responsibility for initiating contact and your self-development pathway 
  • Identify areas of potential collaboration for most effective engagement with a mentor
  • Pursue all mentoring objectives and collaborative works diligently and conscientiously
  • Prepare carefully for meetings and be sensitive to the demands placed on the mentor  
  • Actively listen and participate in meetings and respond promptly to email interactions   
  • Remember to contribute to the relationship as two-way exchanges yield best results
