Dr. Ram Gupta Receives MGA Leadership Award

Ilir F. Progri, Senior Member, IEEE AESS, ComSoc, and GRSS
Associate Editor of the IEEE Systems Magazine, Editor for Position Navigation and Timing

Ram GuptaThe IEEE AESS is pleased to announce that Dr. Ram Gopal Gupta  is the recipient of the 2011 IEEE Member and Geographics Activities (MGA) Leadership Award with the following citation:

“For his distinguished leadership and outstanding contributions as a volunteer, at the Section and Regional levels, serving the IEEE for the benefit of its members and the engineering profession by popularizing IEEE in local industry and common engineering students” [1].

The IEEE MGA Leadership Award was established to recognize sustained leadership in Region, Society, or Board of Governors (BOG) positions for the benefit of the IEEE and its members.

Dr. Gupta has exceptional credentials in one of the most important and growing IEEE markets: India, Region 10. He was a Senior Director in the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies and is still actively leading there. He used this  leadership position to leverage for IEEE to initiate and lead activities that brought together IEEE’s TAB, MGA (RAB earlier), Sections, and Chapters for conferences, workshops, Distinguished Lectures (DLs), events, and meetings across the major sectors of India’s society, academia, industry, and government, all to advance India and IEEE. His activities in the communications, IT, aerospace, defense, systems-of-systems, ATM, and systems development sectors have reflected well on MGA Region 10, IEEE, international communities, and IEEE ability to “Advancing Technology for Humanity” (and earlier “Advancing Global Prosperity”) [2].

Dr. Gupta, IEEE senior member for the previous sixteen years, currently serves on the Board of Governors of  IEEE AES Society and the Board of Governors of IEEE Photonics Society. He started his IEEE service as Chair of the Joint Chapter IEEE AES COM LEO Society of the India Council and achieved the position of Delhi Section Chair and presently India Council Chair, also starting new Student Branches in engineering.  He popularized IEEE technical activities for students, academia, and industry in India; and initiated two major IEEE Conferences in Communications and ATM.

In 2007 he was a Member of the Board of Governors for IEEE Technology Management Board, Chair of the IEEE DELHI SECTION, and Editorial Board Member of The Open Aerospace Engineering Journal published by Bentham Science Publishers. In 2006 he was elected to the Board of Governors for IEEE AESS, while also serving as a member of the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE Communication Conference: GLOBECOM 2006 and ICC 2007.  His Chapter was awarded the Outstanding IEEE ComSoc/AESS Chapter for years 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2006.

As a Senior Government officer, he has collaborated with the government to popularize IEEE. The innovative efforts have led to the sharp increase in the Student Branches in India and the overall membership growth. After taking over as Chair, he retrieved the IEEE AES COM LEO Society of INDIA from IEEE Disqualified Chapters and achieved the Best Chapter Award from IEEE ComSoc for more than five years. Major initiatives include “IEEE ICPWC General Chair” in India since 1996 with participants from 22-25 countries.

Dr. Gupta was the Organizer and Chair of the “IEEE Seminar on Aeronautical Navigation & Communications: Present and Future,” held August 17-18, 2006. He is a Fellow and Life Member of the TEB for the technical publications of the Largest Profession Body in India, IETE (Institution of Electrical and Telecommunication Engineers). He was a member of the nomination committee for an international award worth $800,000 USD for Techno-entrepreneurship development instituted by The TAKADA FOUNDATION, Japan.  His numerous reports enhance the vision of the “Role of United Nations and Specialized Agencies for Developing Electronic Industry in Developing Countries.”

This article is a welcoming message for the IEEE AESS members to highlight Dr. Gupta’s vision, IEEE-AESS, and his eagerness to advance global leadership of the entire IEEE AESS mission.
