Born on April 29th, 1962, married and father of 2 sons, I achieved a MSc Degree inElectronics Engineering (5-years) at “La Sapienza” University of Rome in 1990, with a finalgrade of 110/110.My specialization is in Automated Control Systems, including Nonlinear Optimization, that Iapplied first for the graduation thesis, dealing with Optimization of Orbit TransferManoeuvers. The topic is classical, whilst solution is innovative as far as kinematicsvariables are in the transformed variable domain of the so called “Linear and Regular”Celestial Mechanics.Since then, I joined in the aerospace industrial sector, working first at Alenia Aerospazio(now Thales-Alenia Space). Afterwards I was employed by Telespazio, where I managedResearch and Development Teams, as well as Engineering Units.I have a quite good reputation in the European space sector and hold a concrete technicalbackground experience, spanning from the development of theoretical models andalgorithms to the design, simulation, implementation, testing and qualification of complexmanufactures, which include: spacecraft on-board Attitude and Orbit Control Systems andground Flight Dynamics Systems; more recently, systems to support satellite radio-assistedNavigation and related services, especially in the Civil Aviation application field.I have experience of the entire “product life cycle”, from design phase to the AIT (Assembly,Integration and Test) and AIV (Assembly, Integration and Verification). Being one of thedesigners of Artemis spacecraft feedback control laws and modes, as well as developer ofthe related on-board software, I was involved in the qualification of the Artemis satelliteAOC (Attitude and Orbit Control) component.I am very passionate about the topics of applied mathematics and algorithms, targeted tothe solution of practical problems in the field of space applications; particularly, over lastyears, concerning satellite Navigation.I have good experience with optimization, filtering and estimation techniques, spanningfrom least-squares and constrained adjustment to the determination and control of thestate of dynamical systems. I am very fond and familiar with state estimation of nonlinearsystems perturbed by stochastic disturbances, operated with nonlinear algorithms (e.g.:Unscented Kalman Filter).I also teach the subjects listed above, as a specialist from the industrial field, at UniversityMasters. I kept lessons on Nonlinear Estimation at IEEE AESS Summer School, edition 2011.I am strongly motivated by the necessity of a lifelong learning, supporting it and taking partto related initiatives, including the tutoring of University students. Training of two MScstudents led to the 1st prize for "Best Application" in the Academy section, at the"Aerospace & Defence Forum 2011" organized by National Instruments.I was appointed member of the Technical Program Committee (TPC) organizing ESTELConference 2012, the first International Conference about Space and SatelliteTelecommunications in Europe promoted by IEEE AESS.I have almost completed a University-level textbook on the principles, theoretical modelsand fundamental algorithms pertinent to satellite Navigation, applicable both to the GPS aswell as Galileo constellations. My main papers and part of the teaching material that I produced can be accessed at webpage: http://www.webalice.it/lagrasta.stefano/">http://www.webalice.it/lagrasta.stefano/ .
