Conditions of Eligibility
IEEE and AESS Member. Must be a current in-term member of the AESS Board of Governors (BoG) or previously served on the Board. Must be nominated and selected by the Board of Governors. Cannot have previously served as President or President-Elect.
Primary Responsibilities
- Supervision and Leadership: Supervises the overall affairs of the Society. Provides leadership in managing all aspects of the Society's business and activities. Ensures all officers and committees carry out the mission of the Society.
- Representation: Serves as the primary spokesperson for the Society on all matters not specifically delegated to others. Represents the Society as the designated member of the IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB). Interfaces with all IEEE entities unless delegation is specified.
- Delegation: Assigns supervision responsibility for Standing Committees to specific officers, unless otherwise specified in the Bylaws.
- Meetings: Serves as the chairman of the Board of Governors (BoG) meetings. Develops the meeting agenda with assistance from the Operations Manager. Establishes the order of precedence among Vice Presidents for acting in the absence of the President and President-Elect. Select the locations for the Spring and Fall BoG meetings. Initiates and oversees motions and voting procedures, including electronic voting when necessary, ensuring proper procedures are followed. The President can call special meetings of the Board of Governors.
- Financial Oversight: Provides financial approval for Society invoices and expenses in the absence of the Vice President of Finance and Treasurer.
- Strategic Oversight: Updates the Society’s Strategic Plan in collaboration with other elected officers. Provides direction for the development and implementation of Society initiatives.
- Appointments: Appoints, with approval, representatives to IEEE Committees and other technical societies where needed. Additional appointment responsibilities are outlined below. The President can fill Board of Governors vacancies with the consent of the Board.
- Collaborative Agreements: Signs Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with other IEEE Organizational Units (OUs) and entities.
- Communication: Leads communication with external stakeholders and ensures that Society positions on issues are accurately conveyed.
- General Oversight: Monitors and ensures adherence to IEEE policies and standards in all Society activities. May create special or ad hoc committees, specifying their purpose, duration, and composition.
Travel
Minimum 6 times per year
Travel expenses are reimbursed per the IEEE Expense Guidelines.
- January/February: Strategic Planning Meeting with Officers
- ~May: Spring Board of Governors Meeting and attend the AESS Awards Ceremony typically held at the spring RadarConf or RADAR.
- ~September-November: Fall Board of Governors Meeting
- IEEE Meeting Series held in February, June, and November annually
