Carles Fernández-Prades (Barcelona, 1976) is a research associate at Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC), and currently serves as coordinator of the Communications Subsystems Area. He received the MS and PhD (cum-laude) degrees in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in 2001 and 2006, respectively.
In 2001 he joined the Department of Signal Theory and Communications at UPC as a research assistant, getting involved in research projects at European and National levels. In 2002, he launched an educational innovation project, funded by the Catalan Government, that developed e-learling services and applications about signal processing and communications systems. In 2003, he served as technical manager at UPC for an European Space Agency research related to the search and rescue service to be included in Galileo. He served as occasional lecturer (2001-2004) and as associate professor (2005) at UPC in the field of analog and digital communications.
In 2006 he joined CTTC, although during the second semester of 2007 he was a visiting lecturer at Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana del Estado de Chile (UTEM) in Santiago. In his research activities, he made contributions in synchronization techniques for antenna arrays, nonlinear Bayesian filtering, positioning techniques, design of radio frequency front-ends for GNSS receivers and software defined radio, authoring more than 80 papers in international, peer-reviewed journals and conferences, several book chapters and public research reports.
Dr. Fernández-Prades has participated as a researcher (and sometimes also with managerial duties) in industrial and public-funded projects, including support from the European Commission, the European Space Agency, the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the Catalan Department of Universities, Research and Information Society. He has been advisor of 2 PhD Theses and several MS Theses in Electrical Engineering at UPC and in Computer Engineering at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC).
Dr. Fernández-Prades is a senior member of IEEE and member (current or former) of IEEE's Aerospace & Electronic Systems Society, IEEE's Signal Processing Society, IEEE's Computer Society, Institute of Navigation (ION) and the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP), and served in the organization of the IEEE International Conference on RFID - Technology and Applications (RFID-TA'11), the IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Workshop Series on Millimeter Wave Integration Technologies (IMWS'11) and the European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO'11). He served as lead guest editor of a special issue on flexible substrate antennas in the International Journal of Antennas and Propagation and of a special issue on advances in signal tracking for GNSS receivers in the International Journal of Navigation and Observation. Since 2010, he is serving as a project manager of an open source software defined GNSS receiver.
