He graduated from the Northwest Telecommunications Engineering Institute (now Xidian University), Xi'an, China, in 1982, and received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba, Japan, in 1985 and 1988, respectively.
Dr. Zhang joined the faculty of the Department of Radio Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, China, in1988. From 1995 to 1997, he was a Senior Technical Manager at the Communications Laboratory Japan, Kawasaki, Japan. From 1997 to 1998 he was a Researcher at the ATR Adaptive Communications Research Laboratories, Kyoto, Japan (ATR stands for Advanced Telecommunications Research group). From 1998 to 2015, he was with the Villanova University, Villanova, PA, where he was a Research Professor at the Center for Advanced Communications and directed the Wireless Communications and Positioning Lab and the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Lab. Since August 2015, he has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, where is an Associate Professor.
Dr. Zhang's research interests are in the areas of statistical signal and array processing for communications and radar systems, including wireless communications and networking, cooperative communications, MIMO communications and radar systems, emitter/target localization and radar imaging, optimization techniques, time-frequency analysis, jammer excision, image processing, and RFID systems. His publications include 70+ journal papers, 11 book chapters, and 190+ peer-reviewed conference papers. He holds a Japanese patent.
Dr. Zhang is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a Senior Member of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE). He is a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society's Sensor Array and Multichannel (SAM) Technical Committee. He is an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, and serves on the editorial board of the Signal Processing (Elsevier) journal.
