Dr. Shirley Cheng was an Associate Technical Fellow at Boeing Company until January 2014. Her technical specialty was in advanced terminal guidance and signal processing. Dr. Cheng was either a principal inventor or a co-inventor of 4 US patents , one pending US patent, and one pending UE patent. She was one of the major contributors for patents that received Boeing Special Invention Awards in 2005 and 2007. Dr. Cheng served as a co-chair for the session on “PlatformSystems and Sub-systems” at Boeing Technical Excellence Conferences 15 and 18. Prior to joining Boeing Company, Dr. Cheng was an assistant professor in electrical engineering at the former University of Missouri (Rolla) Graduate Engineering Center. Her teaching repertoire included communication systems, statistical signal/image processing, tomographic imaging and machine vision. In recent years, she has taught classes in signal processing at Missouri University of Science and Technology as an Adjunct Associate Professor. Dr. Cheng served as the treasure, secretary, vice chair and the chair person for IEEE St. Louis section from 1996 to 2000. The section won the best large section award in Region V twice, and many other awards under her watch. She had published in peer reviewed international journals prior to joining Boeing Company. Dr. Cheng received the Doctor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, and the Master of Engineering degree in Biomedical Engineering from University of Virginia. She was a recipient of National Science Foundation Research Initiation Grant in the area of image processing algorithms.
