Marcus Märtens is a computer scientist by profession, working as a researcher, innovator and generalist deploying optimization and machine learning techniques for tackling complex challenges. His multi-disciplinary work has been recognized in network science, epidemic modelling, neuroscience, cyber-security, gaming, defence and space. Marcus Märtens holds a PhD in network science from Delft University of Technology and is an Alumni of the European Space Agencies (ESA's) Advanced Concepts Team. At ESA, he organized multiple scientific challenges and took part in competitions like the prestigious Global Trajectory Optimization Competition (GTOC), consistently ranking in the top3 teams of the world. His work on evolutionary algorithms for spacecraft trajectory optimization was recognized as human competitive, awarding him the HUMIES gold medal. Marcus was involved in the generation of impactful datasets for space, including the PROBA-V dataset for satellite image super-resolution and the SPEED dataset for spacecraft pose estimation. Work on the latter awarded him the Barry Carlton award from IEEE AESS. As of 2024, his published works count more than 1600 citations with an h-index of 17 on Google Scholar. Marcus is currently working as senior research associate at the Australian Institute for Machine Learning, associated with the University of Adelaide.
