AESS EMSIG UoG on guidance and tracking with AESS Switzerland Chapter Chair and Guest Speaker Heinz Wipf included an industry talk Leonardo, projects at University of Glasgow and a panel discussion on the latest trends.

We had up to 17 attendees during the day of which 7 were IEEE members in this hybrid in-person and online workshop.

  • The first talk was by Mr Heinz Wipf our guest speaker Heinz Wipf from AESS Switzerland president on “Swiss GPS Jamming Trials, eight aircraft against a low power L1/CA jammer - The story behind it”. This talk discussed the real-time interference effect of jamming on commercial aircraft navigation.
  • Dr. David Greig from Leonardo (Edinburgh) gave a talk on “The Military Machine Learning Challenge”. This talk discussed the challenge in obtaining and exploiting data in the military domain and how this differs significantly from commercial/civilian purposes.
  • Dr. David Anderson from the University of Glasgow presented “Multi-Fidelity, Multi-Agent Simulation for Synthetic Data Generation & Scientific Machine Learning”. This talk discussed MAVERIC (Modelling Autonomous Vehicle synthetic Environment using Robust, Intelligent Computing) which is a bespoke multi-fidelity, multi-agent simulation engine designed specifically to model systems of autonomous systems in realistic operational scenarios.

These talks were followed by presentations by young professionals.

  • Mr. Jan-Hendrik Ewers (University of Glasgow) presented “Data Driven Probability Map Generation for Search and Rescue Using Agents”. This discussed the prediction of the final resting location of a missing person is critical for search and rescue operations with their limited resources. To improve the accuracy and speed of these predictions, simulated agents can be created to replicate the behaviour of the missing person.
  • Mr. Mostafa Elsayed (University of Glasgow) presented “Extended Small Targets Tracking from ISAR Images”. A selection of track-before-detect (TBD) algorithms for small target tracking from ISAR images to track extended small targets.
  • Mr. Abdullah Akaydin (University of Glasgow) presented “Radar-based indoor navigation system for the visually impaired”. This talk discussed how radar can be used in visually impaired navigation, the requirements and which type of radar sensor is suitable as well as early results on the egomotion signal pre-processing.

The workshop was concluded with discussions around latest trends. The discussions crystalised around the role of university and companies in the education and training of young professionals and the differences in developments of technology from lower TRLs to higher TRLs and how to bridge the gap.

Mr. Heinz Wipf (left) and Dr Julien Le Kernec (right) before the painting of Lord Kelvin. He pioneered important contributions to electricity, magnetism and thermodynamics which we still use today. You can find an exhibition of his inventions at the Hunterian museum at the University of Glasgow where the picture was taken.
