The 2023 International Conference on Radar, hosted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), was held in the beautiful harbour city of Sydney Australia from 6 to 10 November. Held at the award-winning International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), the conference was set against the stunning backdrop of Darling Harbour. With the theme being “Dreaming the radar future”, it composed an exciting array of cutting-edge plenary lectures, tutorials and special sessions that showcased the forefront of international radar research, as well as a panel discussion that explored the future of radar innovation and applications.

The conference attracted a total of 471 delegates, with 183 local and 288 international attendees, making it the most successful Australian radar conference. The rich technical program included 135 oral and 67 poster presentations that covered a wide range of topics with special sessions on drone detection, automotive radar, multidimensional radar imaging, passive radar, sparse array design, space-based SAR applications, over the horizon radar and intelligent processing.

In addition, there were 12 tutorials covering a wide range of topics with 174 participants, an integrated sensing and communication workshop, also having 174 participants, and two international IEEE panel and board meetings.

The conference featured an extensive and high-quality social and networking program that was aimed to foster an atmosphere conducive to establishing connections. Different social and networking functions were held each day, starting with the welcome drinks on Monday at the Pumphouse, the young professional function on Tuesday, the Gala dinner at the iconic Luna Park on Wednesday and the closing drinks held on Thursday jointly with Indo Pacific International Maritime Exposition. A Diversity, Equity and Inclusion lunch was held on the Wednesday featuring a female guest speaker who shared her experience of overcoming obstacles and succeeding in Academia.

The conference enjoyed strong support of three Australian IEEE sections (NSW, Queensland and South Australia), as well as excellent high-level and diverse sponsorship from across government and industry. A number of sponsors took up the opportunity to give industry talks which further enriched the conference.

Prior to the conference, the inaugural Australian radar boot camp was held at the University of New South Wales with many internationally renowned speakers giving lectures and radar demonstrations to share knowledge and foster professional development. The radar boot camp was well attended, having 63 students, and its success means that it will be a key part of future radar conferences in Australia.

The success of the event was made possible through the contributions of great many entities and individuals. We would like to thank the sponsors, conference organisers, and hard-working conference committee. Lastly, we thank all the delegates for helping make this such a memorable experience. For further details, the program booklet is available on the conference website www.radar2023.org.
