Professor Li gave an overview of the array signal processing development over a century. At the begining, Capon beamformer was first introduced, which has better resolution and better interference rejection capability compared to conventional data-independent beamformer. However, the Capon beamformer had a problem of lack of robustness, especially when imprecise steering vector, scarce data snapshots and correlated multipath. To overcome these limitations, iterative adaptive approach was proposed, which could obtain good performance in many challenging scenarios, even under single snapshot and arbitrary array scenarios, it is able to work well. Apart from these, Professor Li also talked about some other newly-developped advanced array signal processing methods, such as the OMP algorithm in the compressed sensing and the parametric MUSIC and ESPRIT algorithms.
