David Alan Garren, Ph.D., has held the rank of Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), in Monterey, California, USA, since 2020, after entering with the rank of Associate Professor in 2012. Prior to his academic career, he acquired over 25 years of industry experience in applied research in various disciplines, including radar, image processing, and signal processing. He has 24 refereed journal publications and over 55 conference publications. He is the author of 8 U.S. Patents, all pertaining to radar and antennas. In 2020, he became a co-author of the textbook Deep Learning for Radar and Communications Automatic Target Recognition. In 2023, he became first author of the textbook Essential Principles of Signals Collection and Analysis. In addition, he is serving as the Senior Editor for Radar Systems technical area for the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems, after having served as the Senior Editor for Electronic Warfare Systems technical area for this journal in 2021-2025 and an Associate Editor for this journal in 2019-2020. Furthermore, he has been serving as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation since 2023.

Professor Garren received the B.S. degree as Salutatorian from Roanoke College in 1986 as a double major in mathematics and physics, and with a concentration in computer science. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from William & Mary in 1988 and 1991, respectively. He was awarded a competitive Office of Naval Research (ONR) Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) from 1991 through 1993. From 1994 through 2012, he held positions at two Fortune-500 defense companies while performing research in various technologies, including radar, signal processing, and modeling. His industry service culminated with being awarded the titles of both Technical Fellow and Assistant Vice President at one of these companies. Professor Garren enjoys conveying his experience in applied research and teaching to NPS graduate students.
