Tim C. O’Connell (S’03-M’09-SM’14) is a Senior Staff Engineer at P.C. Krause & Associates, Inc. (PCKA) in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. From May 2024 through October 2025 he was a Principal Engineer at Hinetics in Champaign, Illinois, USA, where he developed hardware-in-the-loop and simulation infrastructure for Hinetics’ advanced electric machines. He earned a B.A., summa cum laude, in Physics from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, USA in 2003 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in Urbana, Illinois USA in 2005 and 2008, respectively. Dr. O’Connell served for over ten years as an Adjunct Research Assistant Professor of ECE at UIUC, where he lectured on green electric energy technologies, and he has developed and taught short courses and webinars in this area. He also spent 15 prior years at PCKA where he supported a major airframer’s effort to design, verify, build and test flight-worthy hardware for deployment on an active DoD air platform and numerous other aircraft electrification-based projects.
Dr. O’Connell has co-authored over 20 technical papers and three textbooks on electric machines and co-edited the 2022 Cambridge University Press book "Electrified Aircraft Propulsion". He received the 2019 IET Premium Award and the 2010 SAE Charles M. Manly Memorial Medal Award (both Best Paper awards for work in aircraft electrification). He is a member of IEEE (Senior), AIAA and SAE, is a Senior Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Electrification Magazine, and is a founding member of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Council. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Illinois.
