AESS Sponsors 2023 IEEE Rising Stars Conference
The year 2023 started with a major highlight for YPs: The Rising Stars Conference held from January 3-5 in Las Vegas, with support from AESS. Among almost 300 other attendees, Kathleen Kramer, Secretary/Chapter Program Chair, and Philipp Markiton, AESS YP Representative attended the conference to represent AESS and to chat with attendees. Additionally, Kathleen provided a very well-attended talk with an overview about AESS and the benefits of being an AESS member, and about “Evolving Cyber Systems in Avionics”. Furthermore, AESS also had a booth at the exhibition hall, where the YPs had the chance to get informed about AESS, the 50th anniversary of AESS and much more.
During the conference, attendees had the opportunity to participate in a variety of workshops, such as the “Zombie Apocalypse Radio Workshop” given by Phil Bautista, where attendees learned how to use Amateur Radio, or the “YP Leadership Workshop”, given by IEEE YP Past Chair, Emre Ayranci and Alberto Tam Yong. Further workshops covered the topics of “A Practical Guide to Policy: How to Be Heard in Washington”, “Building Financial Independence” or “Capturing Your Dream Job - Resume, Search, Sales, & Acquisition”, etc. In the session “Helping Your Team Succeed”, led by Chad Kidder, the attendees learned about strategies for building and leading successful teams.
Among others, the YPs had the chance to connect with mentors including IEEE 2023 President Saifur Rahman, IEEE 2023 President-Elect, Tom Caughlin, and IEEE Region 6 Director, Kathy Hayashi. Many other speakers contributed to the success of the conference, for example, Ed Tiedemann (Vice President of Engineering, Qualcomm) gave a keynote about “Our Most Ubiquitous Electronic Tool, er, Toy: The Miracle of Cell Phone Technology”, while Whurley (Founder and CEO of Strangeworks) presented about “Quantum Computing and the Next Generation”. Heather Monigan let the attendees know about “Algorithms for Success”, and Sachidananda Babu (Technology Program Manager - Earth Science Technology Office, NASA) talked with the YPs about working at NASA and the future of space science.
In a panel discussion, the attendees heard from experienced young professionals and gained insights on how to make the most of their IEEE membership. The panelists emphasized the importance of being active in the IEEE community and encouraged attendees to take advantage of the resources and opportunities available to them.
Overall, the IEEE Rising Stars Conference 2023 was a great success. It connected young professionals in workshops and social events, and they got to learn from experienced IEEE members and from people from industry. Kathleen, Philipp and AESS would like to thank the organizing team for their effort and the many hours spent in organizing this great event!
