Can you tell us a little about yourself and your academic journey so far?

Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Kayoum Djedidi, and I am currently a final-year Engineering student specializing in Microelectronics and Embedded Systems at ISIMM in Monastir, Tunisia. My academic journey has been a mix of rigorous studies and practical experiences that have shaped my passion for technology and innovation.

From the outset, I was drawn to the intricate world of electronics, where even the smallest components play a vital role in the functionality of larger systems. This fascination led me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, and Automation: Embedded Systems from ESSTHS, where I graduated as the valedictorian. My undergraduate studies provided a strong foundation in embedded systems, enabling me to explore various applications, from robotics to real-time hardware acceleration.

Throughout my academic career, I have engaged deeply in research, particularly in FPGA-based real-time hardware accelerators for power electronics, robotics, and AI. This work has allowed me to contribute to projects that align with my interests in sustainable technologies and innovative solutions.

Beyond my studies, I have been actively involved in the IEEE community, where I have held various leadership roles, including Chair and founder of the IEEE ESSTHS Student Branch and Vice-Chair of the IEEE Systems, Man & Cybernetics Society Tunisia Section. These experiences have not only honed my leadership skills but also deepened my commitment to fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment for technological advancement.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I co-founded OORB, a startup focused on open organic robotics, and currently work as an Edge MLOps Engineer at Ubotica, where I develop machine learning pipelines for edge devices, particularly in space applications. My journey has been driven by a passion for innovation and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the fields of Electrical and Systems Engineering.

You can refer to my resume or volunteering portfolio for more details.

What inspired you to pursue your field of study?

My inspiration to pursue Microelectronics and Embedded Systems stems from a deep curiosity about how the world works at a fundamental level and a desire to be part of the technological advancements shaping our future. As a kid, I was always fascinated by how devices functioned, often disassembling gadgets to understand the intricate components inside. This curiosity evolved into a passion for electronics and systems as I grew older.

One pivotal moment that solidified my decision was when I first encountered the concept of embedded systems in a high school project. The idea that a small microcontroller could control and automate processes in a larger system intrigued me. It was a perfect blend of software and hardware, where every line of code directly impacted the physical world. This realization sparked my interest in exploring how embedded systems could be applied to solve real-world problems.
During my undergraduate studies, I was further inspired by the potential of microelectronics in creating efficient, scalable, and sustainable solutions. Working on projects related to robotics and power electronics, I saw firsthand the impact that innovative designs in microelectronics could have on various industries, from healthcare to energy. My research into FPGA-based real-time simulators for power electronics further fueled my passion, as I recognized the importance of these technologies in advancing automation and robotics.

Moreover, the rapid pace of technological development and the endless possibilities within this field have kept me motivated. The ability to contribute to cutting-edge research and develop solutions that could potentially improve lives and industries has been a significant driving force in my academic and professional journey.

In addition to my deep interest in Microelectronics and Embedded Systems, my passion for applying these technologies to the space field has been a significant driving force behind my academic and career choices. The vastness of space exploration and the challenges it presents demand cutting-edge solutions, and I have always been captivated by the idea of contributing to this frontier.

My interest in space technology was sparked by my fascination with how systems operate in extreme and isolated environments, where reliability, efficiency, and innovation are paramount. Space exploration embodies these challenges, and the opportunity to work on technologies that could support missions beyond Earth is incredibly motivating.

When I learned about Ubotica and their work in AI and Edge Computing for space applications, I knew it was the perfect fit for my aspirations. Joining Ubotica has allowed me to apply my knowledge in real-time hardware acceleration and embedded systems to develop solutions that are critical in space exploration. For instance, the use of hardware accelerators in space offers robust, energy-efficient, and highly adaptable platforms for processing data in real-time, which is essential for tasks such as satellite image processing and autonomous navigation in space.

My work at Ubotica has given me a unique perspective on how embedded systems and microelectronics can be leveraged to solve complex problems in space. It’s an environment where every innovation can have a profound impact on the success of missions and the advancement of human knowledge.
