Host: IEEE Hamilton chapter, Canada & McMaster University

Event Date:  9 October 2025

Event Format: In-Person Presentation

Event Summary: Dr. Mahendra Mallick delivered an exciting lecture on angle-only filtering (AOF) in 3D that combined rigorous algorithms with real-world applications. He first explained several practical applications of the AOF in 3D, including passive ranging using infrared search and track (IRST) sensor onboard an aircraft, tracking by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) using video cameras, ballistic missile tracking using space-based IR sensors, submarine tracking, space object tracking, and satellite-to-satellite tracking. His lecture covered the following topics: Cartesian Coordinates, Modified spherical Coordinates (MSC), and log spherical coordinates (LSC) Dynamic and Measurement Models Review of Existing Research Filter Initialization Nonlinear Filters Using Different Coordinate Systems Filtering Using Range-Parametrized (RP) Approach Posterior Cramér-Rao Lower Bound (PCRLB) Numerical Simulation and Results Conclusions After the lecture, an engaging question-and-answer session took place, during which students, faculty, and attendees interacted with Dr. Mallick on both theoretical and application-oriented aspects of AOF. He also conversed with attendees before and after the lecture, further enriching the exchange of ideas.
