Event Date:  14 October 2025

Event Format: In-Person Presentation

Event Summary: Dr. Mahendra Mallick delivered an IEEE AESS Distinguished Lecture on angle-only filtering (AOF) in 3D using rigorous theory with real world applications. He first explained several practical applications of the AOF in 3D including passive ranging using infrared search and track (IRST) sensor onboard an aircraft, tracking by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) using video cameras, ballistic missile tracking using space-based IR sensors, submarine tracking, space object tracking, and satellite-to-satellite tracking. His lecture covered the following topics: Cartesian Coordinates, Modified spherical Coordinates (MSC), and log spherical coordinates (LSC) Dynamic and Measurement Models Review of Existing Research Filter Initialization Nonlinear Filters Using Different Coordinate Systems Filtering Using Range-Parametrized (RP) Approach Posterior Cramér-Rao Lower Bound (PCRLB) Numerical Simulation and Results Conclusions Dr. Bhashyam Balaji from DRDC, Ottawa, Canada attended the lecture. There was a question-and-answer session after the lecture. Students, faculty, and attendees discussed algorithms and practical problems with Dr. Mallick related to AOF.
