The IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) is honored to award the 2024 IEEE AESS Engineering Scholarship to Opeyemi Sodiq Owolabi.

This scholarship supports students in Electrical and Systems Engineering, and Opeyemi was one of two undergraduate recipients awarded $10,000 and a certificate.

Students are encouraged to submit an application for the scholarship by the December 1 deadline.

Opeyemi shares his gratitude and the scholarship’s impact on his journey in the letter below:

Dear AESS,

I am writing to express my most profound and heartfelt gratitude for the 2024 IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) Engineering Scholarship, which has been an absolutely transformative milestone in my academic and professional journey.

The scholarship has been far more than financial support—it has been a catalyst for personal growth, academic excellence, and professional development. I am deeply honored to share the comprehensive impact this prestigious award has had on my trajectory.

Academic Achievements:
I graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University with an exceptional CGPA of 4.84/5.00, an achievement that culminated in being named the best graduating student in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. This recognition is a direct testament to the confidence and support provided by the IEEE AESS scholarship.

Professional and Research Milestones:

1. Conference Presentation: I had the remarkable privilege of presenting a co-authored research paper titled "A Generalized Anti-windup Approach for Internal Model Control" at the Control Conference Africa 2024. This opportunity not only expanded my research visibility but also allowed me to contribute to the broader academic discourse in control systems engineering.

2. Thesis Completion: I successfully completed and submitted my final year thesis, "Design and Implementation of a GSM-based Smart Energy Metering System". This project reflects my commitment to innovative solutions in electrical and electronic engineering, focusing on smart technology applications that can potentially transform energy management.

Future Academic Aspirations:
Graduate Record Examination (GRE): In preparation for my next academic phase, I recently took the GRE, achieving promising scores of 167 in Quantitative reasoning and 161 in Verbal reasoning. These scores underscore my preparedness and ambition to pursue a direct Ph.D. in Control Systems Engineering in the United States.

The IEEE AESS scholarship has been instrumental in transforming these aspirations into tangible achievements. The financial support provided the crucial breathing room to focus on academic excellence, research innovation, and professional development without the constant stress of financial constraints.

My sincere gratitude extends not just to the financial support, but to the broader recognition and belief in emerging engineering talent. The scholarship represents more than monetary aid—it is an investment in potential, in innovation, and in the future of technological advancement.

Your support has been pivotal in my journey. I am committed to continuing to grow, innovate, and ultimately contribute meaningfully to the fields of electronic and electrical engineering.

With profound appreciation and warmest regards,
Opeyemi Owolabi
