Warren du Plessis at IEEE South African AP-S/MTT-S/AESS Joint Chapter
Host: IEEE South African AP-S/MTT-S/AESS Joint Chapter
Event Date: 4 August 2025
Event Format: In-Person Presentation
Event Summary: Joint AP-S/MTT-S/AESS Distinguished lecturer events were held at the University of Pretoria on 1 August 2025 and at the University of Stellenbosch on 4 August 2025. The presenters were Prof. Özlem Özgün and Prof. Laurent Sevgi from the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society, Prof. Jasmin Grosinger from the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society, and Prof. Warren du Plessis from the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society. The events were arranged by Prof. Sevgi in collaboration with Dr Heinrich Laue in Pretoria and Prof. Matthys Botha in Stellenbosch. Prof. Özlem presented on computational electromagnetics, starting with basic concepts and building up to an overview of the current challenges in the field. Prof. Grosinger presented on sustainable RF design for wireless sensors by significantly reducing power requirements, potentially to the point where batteries become unnecessary. Prof. du Plessis provided an overview of cross-eye jamming with a view to demystifying what is often considered a confusing topic. Finally, Prof. Sevgi provided a range of insights into electromagnetic education and teaching challenges that he has experienced during his remarkable career.
