The IEEE AESS Radar System Panel’s annual Fred Nathanson Memorial Radar Award recognizes a member of AESS who has not exceeded the age of 40 in the year of award receipt. Nominees must be a member (in any grade) of IEEE/AESS and must have made outstanding contributions to the radar art. The awardee selection criteria is based on four equally weighted categories, which are a) the impact of contributions to the advancement of radar systems, b) the breadth of contributions to the radar art, c) engagement with the IEEE/AESS radar community, and d) the strength of reference letters.

Dr. Augusto Aubry from the University of Napoli “Federico II”, Italy was the recipient of the 2022 Fred Nathanson Memorial Radar Award for outstanding contributions to the application of modern optimization theory to radar waveform design and adaptive signal processing. Dr. Aubry was presented the award in person on March 24, 2022, at the 2022 IEEE Radar Conference held in New York City.

Due to the cancellation of in-person radar conferences in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, the March 24, 2022, in-person award ceremony was also used to recognize those recipients. The 2020 award went to Prof. Mateusz Malanowski from the Warsaw University of Technology, Poland for pioneering research in long-range passive radar sensing, in particular the analysis and synthesis of novel detection and tracking methods. The 2021 awardee was Dr. Alexander Charlish from Fraunhofer FKIE, Germany for contributions to radar resource management and cognitive radar.

Nominations of eligible candidates are encouraged. The deadline for submission is January 31st of each year. For more information, please visit: https://ieee-aess.org/awards/technical-panel-awards/fred-nathanson-memorial-radar-award#description.
