IEEE AESS Hyderabad Chapter Hosts One Day Workshop on Radar Sensing and Imaging

On June 21, 2024, the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) Hyderabad Chapter successfully organized a one-day workshop on "Radar Sensing and Imaging" at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) premises, RCI Road, Hyderabad. The event, which saw participation from eminent scientists and professionals in the field, focused on the latest advancements and challenges in radar technology.

Inaugural Session

The workshop commenced with a warm welcome from Dr. Madhumita Chakravarti, Chair of the IEEE AESS Hyderabad Chapter and Dr. Venkata Kishore Kothapudi, Secretary of IEEE AESS Hyderabad Chapter. Dr. Chakravarti also presented on the membership benefits of the IEEE AESS society, highlighting the various activities and opportunities it offers to its members. Dr. Anupam Sharma, Director of DSP, delivered the inaugural speech, emphasizing the significance of radar technology in modern applications. Following this, Sri U. Raja Babu, Director General (MSS), DRDO, addressed the gathering and spoke about the importance of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and its technological implications.

Puneet Mishra from the U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) ISRO, Bangalore, gave an insightful presentation on "Satellite Antenna Design and Characteristerisation," highlighting the technological advancements and future prospects in satellite systems.

Technical Sessions

Following the inaugural session, attendees enjoyed a high tea before diving into the technical sessions.

Talk by Sri Tapan Misra

A notable highlight was the presentation by Sri Tapan Misra, Founding Director of SISIR Radar Pvt Ltd. Mr. Misra, with his extensive experience in microwave remote sensing, discussed "SAR Imaging Technology." He shared his pioneering work in the design and development of various SAR systems, including the RISAT series and the innovative Dual Frequency SAR for the Chandrayaan 2 orbiter.

Talk by Dr. Debasish Deb

In the afternoon session, Dr. Debasish Deb from LRDE, DRDO, Bangalore, presented on "Synthetic Aperture Radar Image Formation for High Squint Angle." Dr. Deb elaborated on radar image processing algorithms and object detection techniques, providing deep insights into the challenges and solutions associated with high squint angle imaging.

Networking and Knowledge Exchange

The workshop provided a platform for professionals and researchers to engage in meaningful discussions and network with peers. The exchange of ideas during the session breaks and lunch fostered collaborations and offered attendees new perspectives on their work.

The event concluded with a valedictory session, summarizing the key takeaways from the day's discussions and thanking the speakers for their valuable contributions. About the Speakers

Sri Tapan Misra: With a career starting in 1984 at ISRO, He was Director of SAC & PRL ISRO. Mr. Misra has been instrumental in designing SAR in ISRO in India. He is known for his contributions to the RISAT series and the development of the Dual Frequency SAR for Chandrayaan 2. Currently, he leads SISIR Radar Pvt Ltd, a deep tech startup specializing in SAR systems.

Dr. Debasish Deb: Dr. Deb works at LRDE, DRDO, Bangalore, with expertise in system conceptualization, hardware design, and software for multiprocessor systems. His specializations include embedded system design, radar system development, and system integration. His work significantly contributes to the advancement of radar technology in India.
