This collection presents a comprehensive overview of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), published in IEEE Aerospace and Electronics Systems Society (AESS). The collection highlights the recent developments and practical implementations across information theory, signal processing, mobile computing, aerospace and electronic systems, as well as vehicular and intelligent transportation technologies. To support this scope, the list features four dedicated special issues and four online resources, each focused specifically on ISAC. An introductory section is included to offer a structured perspective for readers who are new to the field.
The collection further categorizes the most dynamic research directions into six critical research domains that define the modern ISAC landscape:
- Waveform Design & Signal Processing: Designing unified signals that achieve the high resolution required for sensing while maintaining the spectral efficiency needed for communications.
- Information Embedding & Signaling Strategies: Methods for multiplexing data onto radar emissions through spatial modulation, frequency hopping, and intra-pulse index modulation.
- Resource Allocation & Network Optimization: Algorithmic frameworks for managing power, bandwidth, and Quality of Service (QoS) across multi-user, multi-functional networks.
- Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) & Coexistence: Strategies for detecting and mitigating interference in shared bands, ensuring robust operation in "contested" L, P, and mmWave spectrums.
- Opportunistic ISAC: Use of illumination from legacy or co-existing non-sensing emitters to perform sensing tasks.
- Hardware, Circuits, & Accelerators: Practical implementations focusing on GaN-on-Silicon SoCs, FPGA-based real-time processing, and reconfigurable RF front-ends.
- Surveys & Future Perspectives: Comprehensive tutorials and roadmaps addressing emerging trends.
