IEEE Open Journal of Systems Engineering (OJSE) is a new open-access technical journal devoted to the multidisciplinary aspects of systems engineering.  Systems engineering involves elements of model-based systems engineering; digital thread; requirements generation, flow down, tracking, needs analysis, and validation/verification; integration and test; and full life cycle support of the target system. OJSE deals primarily with the science, methodology, and tools of systems engineering, rather than the results of the application of systems engineering that is the focus of other IEEE journals.

The IEEE Open Journal of Systems Engineering (OJSE) is an Open Access journal that is sponsored by the consortium of IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems SocietyIEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society, and the IEEE Systems Council. OJSE provides a forum for practitioners, scientists, academics, and researchers engaged in the discipline of Systems Engineering.  Multidisciplinary aspects of systems engineering is a focus of this journal. Methodologies, tools, principles, and applied engineering aspects of the process of systems engineering for complex systems are of interest. The methodologies, tools, and principles include such elements as model-based systems engineering; digital thread; requirements generation, flowdown, tracking, needs analysis, validation/verification; integration and test; and full life cycle of the target system.  OJSE deals primarily with the science, methodology, and tools of systems engineering, rather than the results of the application of systems engineering that is the focus of other IEEE journals.

OJSE seeks scholarly papers that report original research on the methodologies, tools, principles, and applied engineering aspects of the process of systems engineering for complex systems. OJSE also seeks proposals for special issues. OJSE is an Open Access journal for which authors pay the publication costs.

For 2023, publication costs are projected to be $975 (USD) for a 10-page manuscript. While the official launch date for OJSE is January 2023, manuscript submissions are accepted beginning 1 April 2022. Manuscripts for OJSE are submitted at https://ieee.atyponrex.com/journal/ojse.

IEEE Xplore offers free subscription to the alerting system. When a new article is posted for OJSE in IEEE Xplore, the system sends you an email with the link to the new content. Log in IEEE Xplore, go to the IEEE OJSE, page and select “Add Journal to My Alerts” at the top right corner.

Submission Instructions

The manuscripts should present original work in the scope of the journal and must be exclusively submitted to this journal, must not have been published before, and must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Significantly enhanced and expanded versions of papers published in conference proceedings can be submitted as long as a detailed description of the enhancements is provided. All manuscripts should be submitted in the double column format using an IEEE style file. Instructions and templates (LaTeX or Word) are downloadable from the IEEE Author Center, together with other useful tools for authors. This journal is 100% open access, which means that all content is freely available without charge to users or their institutions. All articles are published under a CC BY 4.0 license, and the author retains copyright. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, as long as proper attribution is given. Open access is provided through the payment of an article processing charge (APC) paid after acceptance. APCs are often financed by an author’s institution or the funder supporting their research. Manuscripts for OJSE are submitted at https://ieee.atyponrex.com/journal/ojse.

Special Issue Proposals

IEEE OJSE encourages proposals for Special Issues. Proposals for special issues are submitted to the Editor-in-Chief.  A template for proposing a special issue and an example of a special issue proposal are provided below to aid in the preparation of your proposal.

Questions

Questions concerning the submission of regular papers submitted to regular issues should be sent to the EiC. Questions concerning papers submitted to special issues should be sent to the respective guest editors shown on the call for papers of the specific special issue. Questions, comments and suggestions, and any other problem concerning the journal as well as any questions concerning papers accepted in special issues should be sent to the EiC.
