Akram Al-Hourani is a Professor and Discipline Leader in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. He also serves as the Leader for Electric and Electronics Research Cluster, and the Deputy Director of the Research Centre for Opto-electronic Materials and Sensors. He received his PhD from RMIT University in 2016 and previously held a leadership role in the satellite and telecommunications industry, managing R&D programs exceeding AUD 120 million in value. Prof Al-Hourani leads cutting-edge research in satellite communications, radar systems, and machine learning, with a strong focus on translational outcomes. He has been Principal Investigator on numerous high-impact projects, including the development of RF interference mitigation systems for synthetic aperture radar, Doppler-based satellite localization, and AI-enabled anti-spoofing for RF authentication. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and is recognized among the top 2% of scientists globally by Stanford University’s citation ranking. His contributions have earned him several prestigious awards, including the Australian Space Industry Academic of the Year (2024), the Municipal Association of Victoria Technology Award, the IoT Alliance Australia Smart Cities Award (2020), and multiple IEEE Best Paper Awards. Prof Al-Hourani is a recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers (2024), and was appointed as a Distinguished Lecturer for IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society for 2025–2027.
