Random Motion Machine for the Simulation of Microgravity Conditions

Exploring the effects of microgravity on living organisms and other objects of interest is crucial for understanding how these conditions impact biological and physical processes. However, sending objects into space for microgravity research is expensive, with costs reaching approximately $80,000 per kilogram, excluding the expense of experiment development. To address this, there is a pressing need to simulate microgravity conditions on Earth, offering a cost-effective alternative to space-based research. This presentation outlines the design and implementation of a clinostat aimed at simulating microgravity effects. The proposed clinostat is a three-dimensional device with two rotational axes and variable speed control, enabling a random positioning mechanism. The design incorporates two motors capable of rotating between 20 and 90 revolutions per minute within a working volume of 20 x 20 x 20 cm³. The resulting robust system is well-suited for conducting experiments to observe the impact of microgravity on microorganisms and other biological samples.
