Award/Recognition Menu
To recognize a radar engineer for outstanding achievement due to a major technical advance, or a series of advances over time, in the art of radar engineering. This award may be given annually if outstanding candidates are nominated. However, the award may not be given every year, because only nominees with major technical achievements are considered. It is anticipated that the award will be given at least once every 3 years.
Historical Background
Dana White Starr and Warren H. White established the Warren D. White Memorial Fund in 1999 and the Warren D. White Award to memorialize their father.
$2,000, a plaque, and travel expenses. Up to $1,000 to attend the award ceremony can be authorized by the AESS President.
Funded entirely by the Warren D. White Memorial Endowment administered by the AESS and managed by the IEEE Foundation.
At IEEE Radar Conference or International Radar Conference
Individual contributions to the radar community through technical papers, presentations, inventions, or products. The selection criteria are based on four weighted categories, which are a) the impact of contributions to the advancement of radar systems (30%), b) the breadth of contributions to the radar art (30%), c) engagement with the IEEE/AESS radar community (20%), and d) the strength of the reference letters (20%).
The nominee shall have made a major technical contribution, or a series of meaningful contributions, to the art of radar engineering. This contribution shall be evidenced to the radar community through technical papers, presentations, inventions, or products. The contribution, or contributions, shall be of significant and nature that the nominee is already well known to the radar community at large and to the members of the AESS RSP.
Eligibility and Selection process shall comply with procedures and regulation established in IEEE and Society/Council governing documents, particularly with IEEE Policy 4.4 on Awards Limitations.
Previous award winners are not eligible.
Nominations are solicited through the AESS website, social media, and quarterly newsletter and by word-of-mouth through the AESS Board of Governors and RSP members. Nominations are collected via a webform on the AESS website.
In case of multiple nominations of the same individual, only the first submitted will be considered; withdrawal of a nomination can be requested either by the corresponding nominator or by the nominee, provided that this request is forwarded to the chair of the awards committee before the expiration of the nomination’s submission deadline.
An individual may serve as a nominator or reference for only one candidate for the Warren White Award in the year of consideration. If the individual serves in either role for two candidates, the nomination and reference(s) will be removed from consideration.
Self-nominations are not permitted.
Nominations should comply with IEEE Policies and restrictions on awards. Incidents of misconduct including, but not limited to, violations of IEEE's publication policies, will be strongly considered by the awards committee and may be grounds for denial of an award or leadership position.
