Position Description Details
Elected or Appointed Position?
Appointed by the VP Publications.
Confirmed by BoG: Yes
Term
A 3-year term with eligibility for reappointment for up to one consecutive term for a total of 6 consecutive years.
Conditions of Eligibility
AESS Member. AESS BoG membership is not required.
Primary Responsibilities
- The EiC is expected to dedicate adequate time, on a voluntary basis, to the tasks necessary to the successful fulfillment of the editorial duties. The time-commitment is not to be underestimated. In addition to the time-commitment, the EiC must be prepared to take final editorial responsibility for the subject-matter that ultimately gets published. It is sometimes the case that decisions are hard to reach owing to opposing (often very weak) reviews and limited insights offered by an Associate Editor. Nevertheless, the EiC must use his or her best judgement and decide in all cases.
- The EiC must perform the standard editorial tasks but an important aspect of the role is close liaison with the Associate Editors (AE). There is a performance spread amongst AEs and those that are slow need to be prompted or avoided and replaced. Moreover, there will be inevitable instances where authors/prospective authors will be unsatisfied with the editorial process and demand redress and clarification. The EiC must either directly provide this service or ensure that a designated person from the editorial ranks (ideally Associate EiC) performs this important duty.
- The EiC is expected to hold regular meetings with AEs. During these meetings, the EiC should briefly appraise AEs and all participants of the status of the AES Magazine and also to use the opportunity to pitch and extract ideas and initiatives from the editorial team.
- A fundamental requirement of the EiC is to drive an ambitious strategy for the AES Magazine to fruition. The EiC is expected to push forward with plans and reforms for the Magazine and make certain that the Magazine remains relevant and fit for purpose in an increasingly competitive market.
- The current demand is for an energetic and dynamic EiC that will revitalize the editorial team and introduce new and exciting initiatives for our readers.
- The EiC role is for three years – an extension will be made upon the decision of the VP for Publications and other relevant BoG members.
